Thomas Couzinier is a French composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist with a strong background in sound experimentations. His body of work explores large orchestral, electronic or hybrid composition landscapes, and includes original scores for film, television, as well as contemporary art installation.
Notable works include INFINITI, a limited series for Canal+, and Zone Blanche (Black Spot, which earned Couzinier and former collaborator Frédéric Kooshmanian a Gold FIPA in 2017), both directed by Thierry Poiraud, Shiny Shrimps,Guyane S2, The Translator, and the widely acclaimed sci-fi animation thriller Renaissance.
As a composer, sound designer, engineer and/or artistic director, he’s collaborated with various renowned artists and filmmakers include Mathieu Kassovitz, Taika Waititi, Future, Yeezy, Jonathan Cohen, Matthijs Van Heijningen, Tony Allen, GESCOM, Joseph Arthur, H5, Karl Lagerfeld…
His academic studies in Acoustics et Signal Treatment led him to a Master of Arts in Sound and Composition within the Department of Visual Communication, at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His years there also allowed him to refine his understanding and mastering of surround sound and binaural sound techniques. As a guest lecturer, he’s given masterclasses and talks at the Institut Technologique Européen des Métiers de la Musique in Le Mans, SODA at Manchester University, the Philharmonie in Paris, University of San Diego… His areas of expertise cover the history of Muzak in architecture, sonic weapons, and the history of recorded music.
Battery Operated, an experimental and experiential electronic music duo with longtime close associate Toby Heys, led to live stage performances at Festivals, sharing the lineup with artists like PLAID, Coldcut, Arca, Kode9 or Clark at Elektra, Sonar, Nuits Sonores, Mira Festival, The Knitting Factory New York, The Seoul Computer Music Festival, or the Palais de Tokyo. The pair were awarded grants by the Arts Council of England, The British Council, North West Arts Board, the French Cultural Services and offered sound research residencies which, along with their Sound Installations, led them to be seen and heard in various art centers and contemporary art galleries around the world such as the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and the Recombinant Media Labs in San Francisco, USA, as well as the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in Melbourne Australia. More recently, the pair have joined forces once again for AUDINT’s latest endeavor, a pluridisciplinary collective project, distributed by Boomkat.
In 2001, with his brother Grégoire Couzinier, he co-founded Kouz, a sound production company, followed by SuperPitch, an independent music house. As Music Creative Directors, they work for such brands as Audemars-Piguet, Armani, Benetton, Louis Vuitton, Canal+, Ubisoft, composing or producing soundtracks, which frequently earn them recognition, prizes and awards in the advertising world, during professional festivals and events (Cannes Lions, Clio Awards, D.A.’s Club, L.I.A., etc).
Thomas Couzinier is based and works in Paris, France, where he takes care of his impressive fuzz pedal collection and cultivates a relentless passion for garage rock, fueled in part by his one-man band Night Shapers.
